Background

The editorial team at our client's company came to us with a very specific problem they needed help solving.

Every year their team needed to process hundreds of product videos for each new product releases. Each product needed it's own seamless 360 spinning videos for a variety of targets.

The Challenge: Edit and Label Video Loops from Footage

To achieve this, their production team would shoot each product on a 360 spinning table for a full loop. Then later the editors would identify the start and end frames, make the edit points and adjust so that it looped seamlessly avoiding any ramp up or ramp down speed. And finally label the clip according to the product name on the slate.

This was a mammoth project to say the least and would take the primary attention of their team for a good period of time every year.

So they came to us asking the right question. Could this be automated?

As we looked into the requirements of the project and how to get from start to finish, we constructed an outline of what would need to happen at each step for this process to be automated.

Loop Solution: Detect the Start & End Frames

We would need to use image analysis on each frame to detect the start and end frame of the loop to edit a seamless loop.

Additionally, the 360 table would take a few seconds to get up to full speed so we would add a slider to account for ramp up time, then detect the start of the loop, move forward until we found a matching frame, and create the edit point so the video would loop seamlessly.

Label Solution: Identify Product Number & Color

To automatically label and organize the loops, we implemented an OCR system that would scan the digital slate int he corner of each shot and extract the Product Number and Color Code. That info would the be used to label the sequence in Premiere Pro for organization.

The Result: Looper

Once all the pieces were in place, the new custom Premiere Pro plugin Premiere Pro: Looper was ready for prime time!

As each clip completed processing, a new sequence would be generated for that clip, labelled with the product name from the slate, looping seamlessly and ready for the editor to start using in their edit.

Additionally, the plugin would allow editors to select the source clips, adjust the crop box for text recognition, adjust and time offset as needed, and then batch process dozens or hundreds of loops automatically.

After completion, this tool immensely sped up post production for the editorial team in Premiere Pro, allowing them to focus on the creative work, and offloading the tedious job of creating seamless looping videos to the automation plugin.
